the victor. In most cases, the pathogens, having a much simpler organization, change
faster than the defense reaction of the human immune system. It is crucially significant

that at the very moment that the body’s defense reaction kicks in, the immune system,
which has a stored energy potential, generates a protective surge (“splash”) of
maximum strength (see F Fi ig g. . 1 10 07 7).

But the immune system is unable to sustain this surge, owing to the organism’s need
to expend a huge amount of energy to maintain it. Soon thereafter, the exhausted
